The company’s roots in Home Decoration go back over 135 years. The current Chairman’s Great-Grandfather, as an immigrant from Russia, opened a contract painting and retailing business in Gateshead upon Tyne in 1878.
It became a family concern with 4 sons joining the business. In 1921 two sons emigrated to New Zealand and set up business in Auckland, expanding into furniture, uniquely establishing, as long ago as 1961, an ‘Out of Town’ retail concept brought back from the USA which grew to 58 superstores.
The family back in the UK, opened stores in other locations with a flagship store in Northumberland Street, Newcastle where M&S are sited today.
One grandson, Lew Rose, having trained in textile production formed Hobart Rose Ltd. in 1959 to manufacture cushions and kitchen textiles in North Shields. The family, business now in its 56th year, has operated in the borough throughout. Production began in a small unit in Howard Street, North Shields, moving to Hillheads, Whitley Bay in 1967, then to West Chirton in 1989 where the company today operates from over 100,000 sq.ft. in 4 factories.
Trade with China began in 1983 following exploratory visits to the Far East. After a number of years of direct import a factory was opened in Tianjin in Northern China in 1994, which continues to operate today. However, a review of off-shore manufacturing in 2011 resulted in certain production being brought back to the UK which enables the company to proudly label many of its products MADE in BRITAIN.
